Captain's Report
Following last year’s successful meeting, the same format of nine holes Greensomes, lunch and then eighteen hole Stableford in the afternoon was continued. This enabled long distance travellers to have a more relaxed journey.
Once again the weather was kind and the course was in good shape considering the previous three weeks of rain. Last year we started on the Blue course, which in places was almost unplayable because of the wet conditions. This year we played the Orange course in the morning and this proved to be a well accepted alternative. We again played the Red and Yellow courses in the afternoon, providing a fair test of golf for players of all standards (once one had mastered the speed of the greens).
Cumberwell is a fine venue for societies, the facilities are spacious and well laid out, the catering tasty and the staff exemplary in both attentiveness and efficiency. The President proved very generous in the supply of wine with lunch and even doubled up as wine waiter.
The afternoon competition was well contested and enjoyed by all according to the feedback over tea and sandwiches. Before moving on to the results I would like to thank Nigel Dowdall for taking on the role of acting secretary for the event in his usual efficient and nonintrusive manner while Tom was taking a break.
The John Waite Memorial Trophy morning Greensomes was a close result with Tom Cox and Alistair Beedie pipped into second place by one point by Tony Gunby and Nigel Dowdall on 19 points. Nigel also featured in he afternoon placings where he came third, with Stu Butler in second behind the winner of the President’s Putter, George Wallace.
