AG Wallace Barr

Cellon Challenge Cup

Presented by A.J.A. Wallace Barr in 1922

Awarded annually to the winner of the Scratch Medal at the Autumn meeting

History

In 1911 Alex Wallace Barr had formed Cellon Ltd to manufacture the cellulose lacquers (dopes) that revolutionised the proofing and strengthening of the fabric of aeroplane wings and windscreens. He was 22 at the time and, thus, he was 33 when he presented this Challenge Cup and he was nephew to Harold Perrin – both were founders of the Society.
The trophy was presented at the first meeting of the Society at St Georges Hill on 22 September 1922. It was the Society’s oldest trophy but, sadly, it was lost in 1976 through theft and no picture has been found. The names of the winners are only known up until the war years but not later due to inadequate record keeping but it makes interesting reading.
