History

Sir Frederick Handley Page, a visionary entrepreneur, epitomised the pioneers who laid the foundations of modern aviation. From establishing Handley Page Ltd in 1909, age 24, at the dawn of aviation to his contributions during WWI and beyond, his legacy reverberates through the annals of aviation history.

In 1916 the Armament Experimental Flight moved to Martlesham Heath in Suffolk as did the Aircraft Testing Flight. These 2 organisations were merged to form the Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE) in 1924 and continued to be dedicated to conducting experimental studies on aircraft and armament. Its pivotal role included providing advice leading to the issuance of a 'Certificate of Airworthiness,' a crucial prerequisite for military aircraft entering service. As aviation burgeoned, manufacturers, designers, and pilots sought the institution's invaluable counsel, fostering a symbiotic relationship marked by exchanged hospitality, including dinners and recreational activities like golf and tennis.

Although the inaugural Contractor’s Dinner in 1922 may not have directly birthed the Aero GS, it laid the groundwork for future collaborations. Notably, Frederick Handley-Page's presence at this event was significant. Between 1922 and 1932, the Aero GS and A&AEE initiated an annual match, culminating in the presentation of the Handley Page Challenge Trophy by Sir Frederick Handley Page himself in 1932, underlining his pivotal role in the relationship between the Aero GS and Boscombe Down.

With the onset of WWII, the A&AEE relocated to RAF Boscombe Down in Wiltshire for security reasons, transforming the airfield into the renowned RAF Boscombe Down. Over time, A&AEE evolved into DERA and later became part of Qinetiq, marking a continuum of its pioneering legacy in aerospace research and development.
